Dortmund has spawned numerous companies in the field of brewing technology, with the city’s history of brewingbeerdatingbacktothemid- 13th century. At the peak of its indus- trialization, more than 70 breweries worked to quench the thirst of local miners and steelworkers. It was in that era, back in 1868, that Carl Kap- pert and his son-in-law, Louis Hol- stein, founded a company in the city for the “sale of technical equipment to breweries and malthouses”, a line of business the company then pursued for almost 40 years. As the start of the 20th century ushered in the rise of bottled beer, the owners began to manufacture bottle cleaning and fill- ing machines. The company evolved over the course of the 20th century, including a number of acquisitions and mergers, to become a full-service provider for the beverage, food and
non-food industry under the name Holstein&Kappert(H&K).In1993,Hol- stein & Kappert joined forces with Seitz Enzinger Noll Maschinenbau (SEN) AG to become KHS Maschinen- und Anlagenbau AG. Following the transition to a limited liability compa- ny (GmbH), KHS became a wholly owned subsidiary of Salzgitter AG in 2011.
Today, the KHS Group employs around 5,000 people across the globe at its international production facilities in the USA, Mexico, Brazil, India and Chi- na, and at domestic locations in Ham- burg, Kleve, Worms and Bad Kreuznach. Dortmund remains its headquarters, the base of its Develop- ment, Service and Sales departments, and the site of a 65,000 m2 production facility.
