Bentley Mulsanne catches the eye

The theme of “Smart Efficiency” is high on the agenda at this year’s Hanover Fair. Companies all along the industrial value chain will be exhibiting solutions for intelligent interaction between cost, process and resource efficiency.

You’ll find Salzgitter AG at the Industrial Supply fair in Hall 5, Stand A14. The focus of the Industrial Supply fair is on material and resource efficiency, with a Solutions Area and a Lightweight Materials Forum in Hall 6 that will be promoting the overall topic of lightweight design and construction.

Salzgitter AG will also be represented at the Job&Career Market in Hall 7, where students, graduates and engineers with some initial professional experience can find out about the employment and career opportunities at the Salzgitter Group.

Themes and exhibits

The largest exhibit, and one that is sure to catch the eye of visitors to the Fair, is the Bentley Mulsanne. This super-luxury motor car boasts a 6.75 liter V8 engine capable of producing up to 550 HP. Salzgitter Automotive Engineering (SZAE) manufactures around 100 components for the body of the Mulsanne, produced in small batch runs in the press shop. The list includes doors, roof, side panels, hood and floor panels to name but a few, manufactured in steel (high-strength and deep-drawing grades with excellent formability) and aluminum. These parts are produced at the SZAE plant in Osnabrück. For some of the components, SZAE has also manufactured the press tools.

StronSal® is another highlight of the Fair. This zinc-magnesium hot-dip process offers improved protection against corrosion at only half the coating thickness. It has been developed by Salzgitter Flachstahl in cooperation with researchers at Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung. Minimizing the zinc coating thickness saves zinc and helps to improve resource efficiency in steel manufacturing. Applications for StronSal® and FolaSal StronSal® include wall claddings for use in the construction industry.

Peiner Träger
is displaying its broad range of sections and broad-flange beams. These sophisticated steel products help to optimize weight reductions and efficiency in the design of steel structures and also have applications in offshore construction.

The latest lightweight developments in exhaust system and structural components from Salzgitter Hydroforming will also be on display. The combination of hydroforming together with sophisticated pre-forming underscores the potential of steel materials and modern processing techniques to reduce CO2.

Driven by both ecological as well as technological considerations, the demand for high-strength steels for tube products is constantly increasing. Newly developed materials available from Salzgitter Mannesmann Precision (SMP) offer pioneering opportunities to push the boundaries of lightweight automobile design with the use of high-strength welded and seamless drawn tubes. Materials development also plays a decisive role in the production of seamless hydraulic cylinders. Low-temperature precision steel tubes optimized for safety provide the necessary reliability in cylinder design for applications such as mobile cranes and construction machinery – especially when subjected to varying climatic conditions. Seamless and welded precision steel tubes from SMP feature in automotive, industrial and energy applications.
