The Salzgitter Group at Hannover Messe

The Salzgitter Group at Hannover Messe

Under this year’s motto of 'Efficiency – Innovation – Sustainability“ the upcoming Hannover Messe – from 19 to 23 April, 2010 – will be showcasing innovations, new developments and technologies, in addition to new materials from the world of industry. With its clear focus on energy, mobility, automation as well as industrial subcontracting, the Hannover Messe addresses the key trends affecting every branch of industry.

The Salzgitter Group and its subsidiaries will be on location at Hall 5 / Stand A14 at the Industrial Supply trade fair, the leading presentation and discussion platform of the industrial subcontracting sector. From materials through to manufacturing technologies and all the way on to finished products, supplier solutions will be presented for a wide range of industrial applications. Lightweight construction and engineering will feature as one of the key topics.

The trade fair stand is a very special exhibit in itself. The impressive central section consists of 700 meters of steel beams made by the Group company Peiner Träger GmbH. It takes its visual cues from the Olympic stadium in Peking – the “swallow’s nest“. The exhibits and topic islands are grouped around the central section.

The traditional customer day on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Pavilion P32 is a genuine Salzgitter Group highlight. The event focuses on dialoging with customers and partners.

The Salzgitter Group will also be on location at the Job & Career Market in Hall 6. Here, the Group will be addressing young fairgoers and young professionals.

Exhibits and topics

A Ford Fiesta is on display at this year’s Salzgitter stand. Various vehicle components such as floor panels and crossbeams are made of micro-alloyed and high strength steel grades such as SZBS600 and SZBS800. These bainitic multiphase steels exhibit high tensile strengths as well as good forming and weldability. They are especially suitable for highly stressed chassis and suspension parts with complex geometry such as transverse control arms, for example. These steel grades enable cost efficient lightweight engineering concepts and were developed in close cooperation with Salzgitter Flachstahl and Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung.

StronSal® is a salient example of coated steel materials. StronSal® is a newly developed hot dip coating for steel. The product offers excellent corrosion protection properties and represents a high performance coating for applications calling for galvanized steel. StronSal® consists of zinc and small quantities of magnesium and aluminum. The product impresses with its excellent paint and lacquer adhesion and weldability.

Salzgitter Europlatinen GmbH is showcasing tailored solutions made of steel for lightweight engineering concepts. The range includes tailored blanks, patchwork blanks and stamped blanks for series production. The parts on display include a sidewall and a lock reinforcement for current vehicle series.

Salzgitter Automotive Engineering will be emphasizing its competence as supplier to low volume series and displaying a roof, A-pillar and D-pillar of the current Bentley Brookland. Starting with the planning of methods on to prototypes and equipment products and all the way through to parts manufacturing, the company provides customer specific solutions.

Salzgitter Hydroforming GmbH (SZHF) is the specialist company of the Salzgitter Group for hydroformed parts and components. SZHF produces hydroformed stainless steel components for exhaust systems, for example. A hydroformed concept prototype will be featured that shows components for carbodies and chassis and demonstrates the lightweight engineering potentials for automotive manufacturing.

MAXIL®, a high strength fine grained structural steel by Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH is an additional interesting example of the extensive application scope of steel that will be on display at the Salzgitter stand. This steel was opted for in the construction of the Junana drilling platform off the coast of the United Arabian Emirates. The drilling platform is especially notable for its capability to vertically adjust the clearance between the working platform and the sea surface, thereby adapting to high waves and tides.

This capability relies on support structures made of MAXIL®, from which the platform is suspended. The renovation and modernization of the Junana drilling platform involved replacing more than 600 tons of steel.

The company KHS AG, a member of the Group’s Technology Division, will be featuring the Innocheck BOS 7 packaging alignment system. The system offers intelligent alignment according to the characteristics of packaging and containers such as embossing on glass and provides a multi-application capable software system theoretically enabling any optional number of inspection tasks based on one and the same software – a so-called Open End Application Program. The solution represents a world novelty. The neuronal image processing functionality provides a user-friendly teach-in routine, while the distributed hardware enables unlimited expansion of system performance – capabilities that also rank as genuine world novelties. With these strengths and capabilities, the Innocheck BOS 7 represents an impressive, future proof hardware and software system from a single, highly professional source.

Exhibits

The Passat CC is a salient example of system partnerships with customers. The carbody will feature as a key exhibit at the lightweight construction special display at Hall 6. The Passat CC is made of steels supplied by the Salzgitter Group. As Volkswagen’s first four-door coupé, the new model is based on the PL/PQ 46 group platform, which is also the standard platform of the popular Passat. In realizing this niche automobile, Volkswagen handled material sourcing on a project related basis for the first time. Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH is proud to have been selected as supplier to this vehicle.

Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH is providing 31 different parts and component dimensions: in addition to other outer panelling components, the company is supplying the roof that is made of electrolytically galvanized cold wide strip of the DC04 steel grade. The long, curved roofline is a special design feature of the Passat CC. Moreover, Salzgitter is providing material for various structural parts. Apart from softer deep drawn steels, higher strength steels account for some 60 % of the parts and components.
