SALZGITTER STORIES
 WORKING WATERSIDE
Inland Shipping and the Salzgitter Group
Surrounded by water on three sides: Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlservice GmbH in the Port of Karlsruhe
Inland shipping vessels transport coal from the Hansaport terminal in Hamburg to Salzgitter, with others carrying scrap for DEUMU. Beams from Peine, coils from Salzgitter and heavy plates from Ilsenburg are shipped from the ports in Peine and Beddingen. Many of the Group’s locations in western and south- ern Germany are also connected to the federal waterways network, such as the
Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlservice GmbH (SMS) site in Karlsruhe. The Group’s southernmost location is the Plochingen warehouse of Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlhandel. Unfortunate- ly, structural limitations and a shortage of space impose restrictions on its ship- ping capacity. “We are experiencing bot- tlenecks in our Group companies in terms of supplies and waste disposal,”
says Dr. Jürgen Harland, Head of Logistics and SCM at Salzgitter Flach- stahl. “There is an extreme imbalance between supply and demand, so ship- owners can choose the freight they wish to carry.” Fabian Gerdes, Head of Cus- tomer Logistics at Salzgitter Flachstahl adds: “That’s why we’ve chartered three ships that will operate solely under our direction.”
