Bulk solids, such as coal and grain, are the principal goods carried by inland vessels, which can measure between 38 m to 135 m in length. Their loading capacities range from 350 t to 3,500 t. Consequently, a 120 m ship replaces around 120 trucks.
Germany’s network of federal waterways runs for almost 7,500 km, including almost 700 km of maritime waterways. Canals, which unlike rivers are not impacted by low water levels, account for around 25%. The Salzgitter Group transports more than a million tons of freight per year via inland shipping, using moorings at many of its locations as well the Peine and Salzgitter- Beddingen ports.
