   Direct reduction
Unlike blast furnaces, which rely on carbon, the DRI plant uses hydrogen to separate the crude iron from the iron ore. This process produces sponge iron, with the main emis- sion being water, which can then be har- nessed in other processes.
*CO2 will only be produced while natural gas is used in the transitional phase. (see below left)

The Salzgitter Group process- es crude steel into steel prod- ucts. At the end of the trans- formation process, following implementation of SALCOS® Development Stage 3, CO2 emissions will be reduced by 95% compared to the conven- tional blast furnace method.
 Crude steel production
An electric arc furnace powered by electricity from renewable energy sources is used to turn the sponge iron from the DRI plant into green crude steel by adding scrap metal.
