 SALZGITTER STORIES
LOW-CO2 STEELMAKING
The SALCOS® production route will, in simple terms, produce steel from hydrogen, iron ore and scrap metal. It will rely on electricity from renewable energy sources and keep emissions to a minimum. Here’s how it works.
 Electricity
Electricity is required to obtain hydrogen (H2) but is only carbon-neutral when generated using renewable energy, e.g. from wind or solar power installations.
          Hydrogen
Green electricity is used in elec- trolysis to split water (H20) into hydrogen for direct reduction and oxygen, which can be utilized in other processes.
         Wind and solar power
     Transitional solution
Natural gas is primarily com- posed of methane (CH4), which contains large amounts of hydrogen. As a transitional measure, and until a sufficient amount of hydrogen is avail- able, methane can be used for direct reduction.
