SALZGITTER STORIES
In the course of its SALCOS® – SAlzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking – project, the Salzgitter Group will replace its conventional blast furnaces and converters with direct reduction plants and elec- tric arc furnaces. Once complete, this will save 8 million tons of CO2 per year, which corresponds to around 1% of Germany’s to- tal emissions. On July 13, 2022, the Supervisory Board of Salzgitter AG approved €723 million of funds for the first devel- opment stage of the SALCOS® program, for investment in the project from 2022 to 2026. The total costs are expected to amount to €1.5 billion to €2 billion. “In ‘Development Stage 1’, we plan to construct a 100 MW electrolysis plant, a direct reduction plant and an electric arc furnace on the Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH steelworks premises by 2025,” reports Martin Zappe, SALCOS® Program Manager. These first elements of the future steel production system will enable us to produce 1.9 million tonnes of low-CO2 crude steel per year – and reduce CO2 emis- sions from steel production on the new route already in opera-
tion with a high share of natural gas, by over 60%. This first phase in the transformation process is one of a total of three planned development stages. By 2033, the integrated steel- works should be fully converted to almost CO2-free steel pro- duction.
Dependable partners have already been lined up for the project. Subject to approval, Salzgitter AG plans to place an order with Italian plant manufacturer Tenova for an ENERGIRON® DRI plant with capacity to produce 2.1 million tons of direct reduced sponge iron per year. Further agreements have been concluded with Avacon regarding the operation of seven wind turbines in Salzgitter; with Uniper as supplier of green hydrogen, and with Ørsted regarding the supply of wind power, the purchase of green steel for wind park construction, and the return of scrap from decommissioned turbines. All measures required for the project are now being implemented at the steelworks.
