Hanover Fair: Salzgitter presents steel products for lightweight automobile construction, wind energy production and resource conservation

Steel is the number one industrial material. It forms the basis for many value creation chains. Innovative steel products are also indispensable for energy production and delivery.

On the basis of exhibits and processes, the Salzgitter Group will be on location at the Hannover Messe from April 8 to 12, 2013 and demonstrating the role that steel plays in lightweight construction, energy efficiency and resource conservation. Salzgitter AG can be found in Hall 6, Stand F02 at the Industrial Supply trade fair. Interested individuals can learn about the hiring and career opportunities in the Salzgitter Group at the Job&Career Market in Hall 6. The Customer and Partner Day, to be held in Pavilion P32 on Tuesday this year, is a traditional highlight of Salzgitter's trade fair activities.

Topics and exhibits
Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG)

The Audi Q5 car body is one of the most eye-catching exhibits: High-strength steel grades improve the properties of components such as side members, B-pillars, rocker panels and cross-members. At the same time, section thicknesses have been decreased, which reduces the component weights and helps conserve resources. FolaSal® offers the best surfaces for demanding applications. Strip-coated sheet is used in all applications calling for cost-attractive corrosion protection and aesthetic surface colors. A color cube demonstrates the large range of colors possible with organic coatings.

In addition, the spring and transverse links from Volkswagen's Modular QuerBaukasten (MQB, or Modular Transversal Toolkit) shows example applications for Salzgitter's innovative SZBS800 material concept. SZBS800 steel exhibits a fine-grained bainitic structure that allows a very high elastic limit of more than 680 MPa, as well as a high tensile strength of over 800 MPa. Bainitic steels feature outstanding formability matched by high strength, and are proving to be key to innovative lightweight body construction.

Applications made of HSD® steel will also be shown with a side impact bar and seat side parts. HSD® (High Strength and Ductility) steel has a high manganese content with added aluminum and silicon. The mechanical and technical properties of HSD® set it significantly apart from conventional high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels. Made with the innovative BCT® (belt-casting technology) process, these steels are both extremely strong and very tensile. Visitors can also view a model of the system at the trade fair stand. HSD® steel's remarkable properties make it possible to achieve considerable weight reduction potential, preferably in components stressed during crashes.

Peiner Träger GmbH (PTG)
Using an exhibit with structural steel, broad flanged beams, and column sections, Peiner Träger GmbH, the largest sectional steel manufacturer in Germany, offers a selection from its full range of structural shapes with a root face up to 1,100 mm. The company's everything-in-one-location philosophy covers the entire process chain, from the manufacture of the liquid steel from scrap to the production of the semi-finished goods and on to the rolling of the finished structural shapes and subsequent shipment. The highly developed products enable the optimization of steel construction in terms of lightweight construction and economic efficiency and are suitable for use in offshore structures.

Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH (ILG)
In some 350 steel grades, thicknesses from 6 - 175 mm and a maximum unit weight of 28 metric tons, ILG delivers approximately 800,000 metric tons of heavy plate a year perfectly attuned to the particular quality demands of customers from all over the world. ILG developed its brand steels BRINAR®, MAXIL® and RESTIL®, each with optimum bending properties for its respective application area, for specific requirement profiles. ILG has been positioned as an important partner in the onshore wind industry since 1995 and in the offshore sector since 2010.

Salzgitter Europlatinen GmbH (SZEP)
Salzgitter Europlatinen continues to focus on lightweight construction in order to reduce CO2 emissions. There are diverse application areas for tailored blanks for intelligent lightweight construction in modern bodywork. Two examples from today's vehicles are the tailored blanks for the tailgate inner plate and for the main chassis beam, which are made of ultra high strength material. The plate thickness in these semi-finished products is reduced individually and the strength is adapted to the specific use.

Salzgitter Bauelemente GmbH (SZBE)
At Salzgitter Bauelemente GmbH coated flat rolled steel products are further processed into profiled trapezoidal sections, cassette sections, and sandwich elements on ultramodern systems. The resulting components combine the strength and stability of steel with the corrosion protection and decorative properties of plastic coatings. SZBE demonstrates the extraordinary performance of lightweight metal construction with hybrid wall construction as an example. This approach combines outstanding structural-physical properties from the areas of thermal, moisture and sound insulation. The resulting solution is consequently ecologically and economically sustainable.

Salzgitter Mannesmann Precision (SMP)
Seamless and welded precision steel tubes from Salzgitter Mannesmann Precision are used in automotive, industrial and energy application areas. SMP develops and manufactures welded-drawn and seamless-drawn precision steel tubes for lightweight automobile construction, for example, for diesel injection systems, high-precision gear shafts, complex camshafts and connecting rod tubes (added value products). In cylinder construction, cold-drawn precision steel tubes provide the necessary reliability, whether in mobile cranes or construction machines, particularly when they are used in different climatic conditions. In the energy sector, the drill rods are used for geological drilling (Drillmax).

Salzgitter Hydroforming GmbH (SZHF)
SZHF will be presenting lightweight construction solutions for body and chassis applications with the hydroforming procedure. Hydroforming allows especially rigid, operationally reliable and yet crash-proof components made of steel and aluminum. SZHF will also be presenting IHU exhaust components that ensure the highest strength requirements in connection with good flow behavior in the most compact available space, also under the most demanding operating loads.
