Solutions that aid lightweight design and conserve resources

The innovative products that emerge from an efficient steel industry form the basis for an entire range of value chains. At the Hanover Fair from April 23 – 27, 2012 the Salzgitter Group will be displaying a spectrum of exhibits and processes that demonstrate the vital importance of steel for lightweight construction, energy efficiency and resource conservation. You’ll find Salzgitter AG at the Industrial Supply fair in Hall 5, Stand A14. Or if you are interested in a career with the Salzgitter Group, visit the Job&Career Market in Hall 6. One of the traditional highlights of Salzgitter’s presence at the fair is the Customers and Partners Day on Tuesday in Pavilion P32. There will also be a demonstration of lightweight design solutions in the Solutions Area in Hall 6, where Salzgitter has two exhibits: A wing panel for the VW Tiguan which is coated with StronSal® resulting in outstanding resistance to corrosion, and a longitudinal support for the Tiguan of higher-strength steel as a tailored blank.

Themes and exhibits

Salzgitter Flachstahl

One of the most striking exhibits is the bodyshell of the Audi Q5: The performance characteristics of components ranging from side members and B-pillars to sills and cross-members are enhanced thanks to the use of high-strength steels. Wall thicknesses are also reduced, thereby lowering the weight and helping to conserve resources. FolaSal® offers the ideal surface for demanding applications. Strip-coated precision steel is used wherever aesthetic appearance is as important low-cost corrosion protection. This is illustrated by an ALFA® plus roofing panel manufactured by Blachprofil 2 with a module width of 1,183 mm and a length of 350 or 400 mm, finished in FolaSal® polyester coating. At this year’s fair Salzgitter Flachstahl is also focusing on extra-high-strength thermo-mechanically rolled steels for cold forming. And how better to demonstrate these than with a truck-mounted crane arm from Palfinger AG? The material used here is S700MC steel. These extra-high-strength thermo-mechanically rolled steels are easy to stamp and cut and lend themselves to cold-forming. They also exhibit outstanding welding characteristics and even load distribution, and of course being stronger, they save weight. Applications include construction plant and machinery, commercial vehicles and transportation, as well as structural steelwork.

Crash tests demonstrate the outstanding properties of ultra-high-strength, high-ductility and reduced-density HSD® steel. HSD® steel exhibits a tensile strength of 1000 MPa combined with an elongation at fracture in excess of 50 % and uniform elongation of 45 %, while its density is also reduced by five percent. These exceptional mechanical properties clearly distinguish HSD® steel from conventional high- and ultra-high-strength steel materials, offering the potential to substantially reduce the weight of components that take the brunt of a crash impact.

Peiner Träger

Peiner Träger is displaying its wide range of sections and broad-flange beams. These sophisticated products help to optimize weight reduction and efficiency in the design of steel structures and are also finding applications in offshore construction.

Trading Division

The Trading division of Salzgitter AG is represented by companies, offices and agencies in every important business center in Europe as well as at locations of major importance the world over. Staff from this division will be available during the fair for contacts and discussions. In addition to providing information about steel and steel products, they will also be delighted to describe the extensive services offered by the Group, from advising on important technical issues through to the organization and economical implementation of projects.

Salzgitter Mannesmann Precision

Seamless and welded precision steel tubes from Salzgitter Mannesmann Precision (SMP) feature in automotive, industrial and energy applications. SMP develops and manufactures welded drawn and seamless drawn precision steel tubes for lightweight automotive components and modules such as diesel injection systems, precision transmission shafts, sophisticated camshafts and hollow piston rods (added value products). Low-temperature precision steel tubes provide the necessary reliability in cylinder design for applications such as mobile cranes and construction machinery – especially when subjected to varying climatic conditions. In the energy sector Drillmax drill rods are used in geological drilling operations.

Salzgitter Hydroforming

Salzgitter Hydroforming is focusing on innovative hydroformed tube products. The range of applications for hydroformed components is constantly growing. The freedom of design which this process affords has for many years been reflected in successful advances in lightweight automobile construction, and is now attracting increasing interest in other branches of industry. The demonstration rig presented by Salzgitter Hydroforming gives a powerful illustration of how this media-based forming process works.
